A Disciple’s Word of the Week – “Shevet”

Term:

“shevet” – “shebet,” “shay’-bet” (Hebrew – Old Testament)

Definition:

“Rod, (literally) a stick (for punishing, writing, fighting, ruling, walking, etc.). Also used to denote a sceptre or staff.

Passages:

  1. Occurs 83 times in the Old Testament (English translations).
  2. Proverbs 13:24; 22:15; 23:13-14; 26:3; 29:15

Application:

Modern child rearing techniques have all but abandoned the inclusion of corporal punishment. The “rod” is a stark reminder that children must be disciplined – in some cases with physical means – in order to shape and mold them properly.
