Definition:
“Rod, (literally) a stick (for punishing, writing, fighting, ruling, walking, etc.). Also used to denote a sceptre or staff.

Application:
Modern child rearing techniques have all but abandoned the inclusion of corporal punishment. The “rod” is a stark reminder that children must be disciplined – in some cases with physical means – in order to shape and mold them properly.
